Sustainability at
The Steam Packet.
Rather than just being a buzz word, we try our hardest to be sustainable and to look after the environment.
The local area is rural and largely unspoilt with the main industries still being agriculture and fishing. As regards agriculture, although modern practices have been adopted, with family farms merged into larger units, there is still much emphasis on the traditional way of doing things. This shows in the landscape: pastures teeming with wildflowers insects and wildlife, waterways still full of fish, flora and fauna.
As a tourist business we are judged by our peers and neighbours. They expect us to protect the assets which give them their livelihoods, and we take pride in doing so.
We have analysed the areas where we can have most influence and do our best to exert these influences. Thus, you will see from the map our suppliers’ locations yield the best reduction of food miles and not every pub can boast its beer is brewed at a brewery within walking distance!
Please respect the locality and try to have as little impact as possible on the wildlife whilst you are here. A field walk at dusk or dawn will have you spell bound. Deer, hawks, hares, stoats and weasels abound inland and crabs lobster shrimps scallops and whelks are common over the harbour wall.
Don’t forget we are also a Dark Skies area, so a gaze upwards after nightfall from the beacon at the back of the inn will reveal the heavens in their true glory.
